History - Victorians - 2012

Towards the end of our Victorians topic we had a school day to discover what it was like to go to a Victorian school room. 

We sat in rows and had to do a lot of chanting! We also had to write on to slates. Some people didn't do a very good job. They wore the dunce's hat!

We wrote out some well known proverbs such as 'children should be seen and not heard, silence is golden and manner maketh the man'. To experience what it would have been like to be left handed in Victorian times we all had to write with our opposite hand. This wasn't easy, two children even got the cane from Mrs Dolman.

We got to do some exercise drills but we weren't very good with our left and rights.

Eventually we got to have our Victorian lunch which consisted of jam sandwiches and a delicious Victoria sponge cake baked by Mrs Dolman.

DT - Enterprise Week - 2012

Last week was an exciting week. We designed and made a range of products to sell in aid of Sports Relief. We found out about this charity and how our money would be used for such a worthy cause. 

Over the week we designed and made footballer door-stops and hair accessories with a London theme. We used our DT sewing skills to create some quality finished products.

We carried out some market research and then decided on a price to ensure that we made as much profit as possible. We designed and made posters to advertise our amazing products and created radio adverts for the whole school assembly. We then set our stall ready sell, sell, SELL!

We made £105 in total!

Also during Enterprise Week we thought about our aspirations for the future. We had a visit from Becki Houlston who talked about her job and inspired us to work towards our goals. 

History - Victorian Artifacts - 2012

We found a box with a date 1845 on it. The box contained a range of artifacts from the past. We knew it was from the Victorian period and we used our prior knowledge to predict what could be in the box.


Finally we opened the box to reveal a range of objects. We studied them closely, drew them and then thought carefully about their purpose and function.

Literacy - Character descriptions - 2012

In literacy we have been thinking carefully about how we can improve our descriptive writing. We took some inspiration from some of the books that we have read. We love Roald Dahl because he is excellent at creating characters using exaggeration. For example the evil characters are not just evil, they are really evil, such as the Bloodbottler in The BFG and the Grand High Witch in the witches. The grumpy characters are really grumpy like Grandma in George's Marvellous Medicine, and disgusting characters don't get much more disgusting than Mr and Mrs Twit! Vile!

We decided to create some character descriptions of our own. Listen carefully and see what you think!

Numeracy - Calculation - 2012

Our task was to furnish a new bedroom. Everyone was given a budget and a list of essentials that they had to purchase. These included a bed with mattress, a wardrobe, a chest of draws, a duvet, a pillow, a duvet cover, a lamp, some curtains and a curtain rail, a rug and a mirror. 


We had to then add up the items and subtract the totals from our budget. We had to be careful not to go over budget or we would be charged by the bank of Mrs Houlston!


We searched online for the best value products and then drew and labelled a plan of our new bedroom. 

The prizes for sourcing the cheapest products went to Jamie, Erin, Sam and Kie. They managed to get all of the essentials and had the greatest budget remaining. Unfortunately, two people went over budget. Alex blew £649 on a 3D TV! Emily got carried away with shopping and had to ask for a £200 overdraft.
