RE - Rangoli Patterns - 2011

Diwali marks the beginning of the new year in the Hindu calendar and is celebrated by people of Hindu and Sikh faiths.
At Diwali, beautiful Rangoli patterns decorate floors outside homes and temples such as the Hindu Mandir and Sikh Gurdwara.
Rangoli patterns are made using brightly coloured powders, sometimes they are made with flower petals.
Designs are inspired by the beauty of nature. Pictures of flowers and animals are seen in many patterns.
Different shapes are used to make the floor art. Some are square, while others are circular. They are all symmetrical.
Diya are added to Rangoli patterns. The light welcomes the goddess Lakshmi into homes. She brings luck and good fortune to people at Diwali.
Careful attention to detail makes Rangoli patterns beautiful works of art.
The basic shape of the pattern is made first, then colours are added.
