Literacy - poems - 2011
In class we have been looking at how poems can create powerful images for the reader. We looked at how poets created imagery by encouraging the reader to draw on previous experiences and emotions. We also found out about personification, where objects are given human characteristics.
We created some poems using these techniques.
Colourful images
We thought about images that represented different colours and used these ideas to create some colourful poems.
What colour am I?
Colour of the beautiful sunset on a summer night,
Bees extracting pollen on a blazing day,
Burning heat, exploding out of a volcano,
Screaming to get out,
I am in love with the amazing citrus fruits,
I jump from a tin with my friends and sit on toast,
The glow of fire radiating heat.
What colour am I?
I am orange!

The colour of a rose given on valentines day,
A field of poppies swaying in the wind,
Dripping blood from a knight's sword,
A kiss from your mum on the first day of school,
A danger sign from the man on the news,
A heart pounding inside a runners body.

Clouds walking around minding their own business
My name is light
I am the icy blanket of snow
The enormous snow coat dressing the land on a winter morning
Plain is my middle name

Energy worn out
Death spreading across the battle
I swallow life like a knife
Rampaging fear
Death everywhere

Stars flying through the sky as I look up
They wink at me whilst swimming
Shooting star flashes across the sky
As colourful as fireworks in the dark
Stars waving slowly in the sky
The North star points North like a compass arrow

Welcome to LA
We are all excited to be back at school and are looking forward to a fantastic first term. We have already created a display of the home learning has taken place during the holidays. What an amazing variety!
In our class we have some creative 3D models of LA. Both Katie and Emily have worked hard on these over the summer. Each model shows the layout of LA and includes facts about the surrounding areas.
Katie's model of LA.
Katie quoted, "I wanted to do something different rather than research facts, so I decided to put together a bright and bold 3D model that would stand out".
Emily's model of LA.
Emily commented, "I started looking for information on the internet and once I found the sign of Hollywood, I decided to create a model showing the layout of LA".
There are many other amazing pieces of home learning which are on our Los Angeles board in the classroom. Below are a further selection of pictures.

California is the most populated state in the USA
California is the 3rd biggest state in the USA
If California was a country it would be the 8th richest in the world!
Los Angeles is 5295 miles from Blandford
Los Angeles has a population of 10.5 million people, which is 1141 times the population of Blandford.
