Literacy - Biographies - 2011

We chose a range of famous people to research facts about their lives. We looked at when and where they were born, their childhood and then their adult lives. We also included key events.

We created slides to share with the class and some of us recorded our presentations.

Here are some examples

Numeracy - Measures Home Learning - 2011

Our home learning task was to use a recipe and increase the amount of ingredients to feed 4, then 10 times more people. We used multiplication facts to calculate the quantities accurately. Some of us even decided to put our measuring and weighing skills to the test by baking a product. We were lucky enough to sample some of the spectacular home baking.

Here are some of the products made, but some were demolished before we had a chance to get a photo!

Art - Clay Modelling - 2011

Linked to our topic, we found out about religions and festivals celebrated in India. We heard the story of Rama and Sita and found out about the festival of Diwali. Everyone made and decorated their own Diya lamps.

Numeracy - Measures - 2011

In Numeracy we have been looking at measures. We decided on the best instruments for measuring different lengths.

The perimeter of a football pitch:

Trundle wheel - metres.

The height of the shed:

Tape measure - metres or centimetres.

The width of your thumb nail:

Ruler - millimetres

We had lots of fun measuring a range of lengths, heights and widths. We made sure that we read the scales accurately.

Converting from millimetres to centimetres

We converted metres to centimetres and then to millimetres.

We also converted kilometres to miles.

Literacy - poems - 2011

In class we have been looking at how poems can create powerful images for the reader. We looked at how poets created imagery by encouraging the reader to draw on previous experiences and emotions. We also found out about personification, where objects are given human characteristics.

We created some poems using these techniques.

Colourful images

We thought about images that represented different colours and used these ideas to create some colourful poems.

What colour am I?

Colour of the beautiful sunset on a summer night,
Bees extracting pollen on a blazing day,
Burning heat, exploding out of a volcano,
Screaming to get out,
I am in love with the amazing citrus fruits,
I jump from a tin with my friends and sit on toast,
The glow of fire radiating heat.
What colour am I?

I am orange!

Logan

What colour am I?

The colour of a rose given on valentines day,
A field of poppies swaying in the wind,
Dripping blood from a knight's sword,
A kiss from your mum on the first day of school,
A danger sign from the man on the news,
A heart pounding inside a runners body.
What colour am I?

I am red!

Gergia GA

What colour am I?

The colour of delicate daisy petals
Clouds walking around minding their own business
My name is light
I am the icy blanket of snow
The enormous snow coat dressing the land on a winter morning
Plain is my middle name
I disappear at night
What colur am I?

I am white

Maddy

What colour am I?

Terror all around
Wrapped in endless darkness
Energy worn out
Death spreading across the battle
I swallow life like a knife
Rampaging fear
Death everywhere
The colour of doom
Relentless destruction and misery
What colour am I?

I am the colour Black

By Fraser

What colour Am I?

My favourite lipstick on my soft lips
Pretty flowers bursting into life
My flushing blushing cheeks
Blossom falling gently
I am inside a calm sunset
The colour of a rose standing in the back garden
What colour am I?

I am the colour Pink

We also watched some video cips and studied some images of stars. We used these ideas to write our poems. Can you spot some personification?

Stars

Stars flying through the sky as I look up
They wink at me whilst swimming
Shooting star flashes across the sky
As colourful as fireworks in the dark
Stars waving slowly in the sky
The North star points North like a compass arrow

by Sam M

Night Sky

Shooting Stars
Made out 24 carot gold
Pelting through and swimming through the milky way
Gymnasts doing back flips around the moon
Some dancing stars do the moonwalk on the moon
The shooting stars blast blast like a bullet
All of them smashing through the sky
Aiming for a target

by Jamie

Star

Shooting stars flashing across the night sky as fast as a speeding bullet
Glows and sparks as brightly as a firework
Swimming in the night sky
Flashing in the night sky

by Alex

Stars

Stars scattered in the sky
Dancing at a disco - just like maniacs
Stars are getting angry and exploding
And screaming as they burst

Stars running across the dark sky at night
As fast as elite athletes
Chuckling as they are crying with laughter
Stars twinkling in the sky
Talking as the night goes on
Running out of conversation as the sky grows light

by Holleigh

Stars

Stars
Glowing brightly full with pride
Swimming calmly in the galaxy
Three kind faces shinning down at earth

They all have different personalities
Zooming off to work because they are late
Glowing with anxiety

Exploding with anger
Spreading their arms around the world
Disco dancing energetically in the galaxy

Twirling and spinning in the air
Glittering brightly in the sky
Singing merrily their favorite tunes

by Harriet

Star Poem

Stars moonwalking through the air
A ball of burning plasma winking at me
Epic scenes, everyone awestruck
Neons above the earth shimmering to all life

Bright lights blind the sky at night
Glittering in the galaxy
Disco dances lighting up the night
Rapidly spinning in thin air
Exploding with anger

Welcome to LA

We are all excited to be back at school and are looking forward to a fantastic first term. We have already created a display of the home learning has taken place during the holidays. What an amazing variety!

In our class we have some creative 3D models of LA. Both Katie and Emily have worked hard on these over the summer. Each model shows the layout of LA and includes facts about the surrounding areas.

Katie's model of LA.

Katie quoted, "I wanted to do something different rather than research facts, so I decided to put together a bright and bold 3D model that would stand out".

Emily's model of LA.

Emily commented, "I started looking for information on the internet and once I found the sign of Hollywood, I decided to create a model showing the layout of LA".

There are many other amazing pieces of home learning which are on our Los Angeles board in the classroom. Below are a further selection of pictures.

In class we found out more about Los Angeles and the state of California. Some interesting facts are:

California is the most populated state in the USA

California is the 3rd biggest state in the USA

If California was a country it would be the 8th richest in the world!

Los Angeles is 5295 miles from Blandford

Los Angeles has a population of 10.5 million people, which is 1141 times the population of Blandford.
